Everybody knows Sushi. But there is a lot more variety of dishes the Japanese cuisine offers.
Sushi
Sushi is defined as a dish containing rice which has been prepared with sushi vinegar. The way ingredients are put together determine the different type of sushi. Served with soy sauce and wasabi (japanese horse radish).
NIGIRI (Hand-formed sushi)
Small rice ball with seafood topping such as tuna (maguro), shrimp (ebi), salmon (sake), eel (unagi), so on.
GUNKAN (Battle-ship formed)
Small rice ball with a strip of Nori (dried seaweed sheet) wrapped around, with some soft, loose ingredients. Sea urchin (uni), salmon roe (ikura).
MAKI (Roll)
Sushi rice and fish and/or other ingredients rolled with Nori (dried seaweed sheet).
TEMAKI (Hand roll)
Cone formed Nori with sushi rice, fish and/or other ingredients.
CHIRASHI (Scattered sushi)
A bowl of sushi rice topped with variety of fish and some other ingredients.
Sashimi
Thinly sliced raw fish, traditionally served with soy sauce and wasabi.
Tempura
Crispy deep fried seafood or vegetables with light batter. Served with dipping sauce (Tentsuyu).
Teriyaki
Grilled/sauted meat or fish cooked with teriyaki sauce. Teriyaki sauce is soy sauce based savory-sweet sauce.
Rice with Miso Soup
Steamed white rice with miso soup is all Japanese comfort food. Side with Oshinko(pickled vegetables) is even better!
Miso soup is Japanese traditional soup made with miso (soybean paste), dashi (fish or seaweed stock), and other ingredients. Tofu and wakame (seaweed) are very popular.
Bento
Boxed lunch; just about anything goes as to what kind of box or container is used, as well as what is put inside that box.
Donburi
Bowl of rice with various kinds of toppings.
Oyako-don; Scrambled egg mixed with chicken and onion.
Katsu-don; Tonkatsu (deep fried pork) with egg.
Unagi-don; BBQ eel with savory unagi sauce.
Noodle
There are various traditional Japanese noodle dishes. As well as some dishes which were introduced to Japan and Japanized afterwards such as Ramen (originally Chinese). Served hot in big bowl of soup, or served cold with sauce.
UDON; Thick white noodle made from wheat flour.
SOBA; Thin brown buckwheat noodle.
RAMEN; Medium yellow noodle made from wheat flour and egg.
